Before you start diamond shopping, it's important that you have an understanding of what you're buying.

This guide simplifies the four Cs of diamonds — cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight, so you can select your diamond based on the same criteria gemologists use to grade them.

After reading through this guide, you'll be ready to choose the diamond that's right for you.

It's fairly common to confuse a diamond's cut with its shape. The cut describes a diamond's light performance, dimensions and finish. Shape refers to the overall outline of the diamond when viewed from the top. Round is far and away the most popular diamond shape. In the other shapes known as fancies the most popular are the square cuts, specially princess.

The cut of a diamond has the most effect on its sparkle, or brilliance. Even if the diamond has perfect colour and clarity, a poor cut can make a diamond look dull.

Colourless diamonds are very rare and therefore more highly valued. Diamond colours are graded from D to Z, being D totally colourless. Colour traces are noticeable from I to Z, and this will become more apparent as we get closer to Z.

To choose a diamond with no colour noticeable to the unaided eye Platinum Diamonds recommends to purchase a diamond graded as H colour or better.

Flawless diamonds are very rare and therefore more highly valued. Over 99% of diamonds have flaws, also known as inclusions. Clarity is graded based on the number, location, size, and type of the inclusions found in a diamond.

The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. Many people believe carat refers to size, however it refers to weight. A 1 carat diamond can vary in size depending on the cut of the diamond. Since larger diamonds are more rare than smaller diamonds, diamond value tends to rise exponentially with carat weight.

1 carat = 0.2 grams

Make sure the diamond you purchase is accompanied by a full certificate. A grading report documents
the specifications of a diamond like the four Cs, and it is also proof that it has undegone a professional
examination.
